• Exotic woods more prevalent - The list of woods used in furniture used to read from "Ash to Zebra", with lots of recognizable names in between - like Walnut, Pine & Cherry. Now it reads from "Afrormosia to Zorra" with species like Pujara and Miranti sandwiched in the middle. With the emphasis on oversees manufacturing - our vocabulary of wood species is increasing rapidly! Be on the lookout for some of these exciting colors and textures.
• Color is Hot - Neutral is always in style because it is always easy. But for those of you on the style trend fast track - don't shy away from your use of the color wheel! Blues and greens are everywhere - along with the lighter shades of coral and yellow.
• Comfort and Luxury combine forces - we want to be comfortable in our family rooms - but they better look great! That is what our client base is asking for - so we are seeing it at furniture market. Lots of style - mixed with the comfort that you get with an old shoe. Who can
beat that?!
• Recycled furniture? (reclaimed pieces) - This idea has been around for a while - but it has taken hold of the folks who make furniture. We saw tables made of old doors, entertainment centers made from reclaimed floor boards and chairs made up of moldings and fireplace surrounds! These pieces look interesting when paired with something new and shiny. The contrast in exciting!
• "X" marks the spot! - pick up a piece of furniture or a yard or two of fabric with this motif and you will be considered
up to date!
• Green is Glam - The idea is to change the world, one room at a time. The environmentally conscious movement seems to be a hot topic these days. Green was once a word and interest often associated only with the liberal Birkenstock crowd. It is becoming a topic of conversation amongst industry professionals-which means one thing- our clients are asking about it!
• Indoor moves outdoor (expand your home's
square footage) - Fabrics and furniture that can be used outdoors as well as in were all over market. Even in areas of the country where "living" out of doors proves to be more of a challenge - homeowners are stepping up and moving out. Fresh air is good for the mind apparently, because many of the showrooms sported multi-purpose rooms that would fit in a family room or out on your back porch.
